Audi is preparing to relaunch the A2 name for a distinctive, entry-level electric vehicle. The new model, slated for unveiling before year-end, is positioned as a spiritual successor to the original A2 from the early 2000s, but with a modern crossover-inspired design.
Design and Positioning
The upcoming A2 will feature a characteristic “one-box” exterior, echoing the original’s short hood and split rear window. However, it leans more towards a crossover profile. This new EV will effectively replace the A1 and Q2 in Audi’s lineup, with production of those models ending in late 2026.
Pricing and Performance
With an expected starting price around £30,000, the A2 will become Audi’s most accessible electric vehicle, undercutting the Q4 E-tron (£47,000). In comparison, the current A1 begins at £24,000, and the Q2 at £28,000. The vehicle will utilize a 400V system and rear-wheel drive, sharing the MEB platform with the Volkswagen ID 3.
Technical Details
Originally intended for the delayed 800V SSP platform, the A2 will instead leverage the MEB architecture. This provides battery options ranging from 58kWh to 79kWh and power outputs from 168bhp to 282bhp. Due to its streamlined design, the A2 is expected to achieve a range exceeding the ID 3’s 370 miles.
Market Role
Audi engineers envision the A2 not as a direct competitor to premium mini-MPVs like the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, but as filling a gap left by the discontinued BMW i3. The A2 will offer a unique blend of practicality, efficiency, and modern design within the electric vehicle segment.
The revival of the A2 name signals Audi’s commitment to expanding its electric lineup with innovative and affordable options, targeting a market segment that demands both style and sustainability.
