BMW’s electric vehicle lineup is expanding rapidly, and the upcoming i3 sedan is taking shape as a key component of this shift. The car is poised to merge the technology from the iX3 with a new sedan body style, marking a significant step in BMW’s electrification strategy.
Design Evolution: From Concept to Reality
The i3’s design draws heavily from the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept, though production models will tone down some of the more radical elements. Expect a more refined look than the initial concept suggested, with smaller, slimmer headlights and a sharper front bumper. Renderings show a departure from the current 3-Series, featuring split shoulder lines and flush door handles for a modern aesthetic.
The rear of the vehicle is also evolving, with taillights appearing smaller than those on the concept car. Prototypes suggest they might resemble the units from the 2-Series Gran Coupe, offering a sleek, understated look.
Interior Transformation: A New BMW Experience
Stepping inside the i3 will be a departure from the traditional BMW cockpit. The interior will feature the Panoramic iDrive concept, replacing the conventional instrument cluster with information projected onto the windshield and a large central touchscreen. The layout will mirror that of the iX3, signaling a broader shift in BMW’s interior design philosophy.

Shared Platform, Expanding Power Options
The i3 will be built on the same Neue Klasse EV platform as the iX3, ensuring a shared foundation for electric performance. Importantly, the combustion-powered 3-Series will continue alongside the i3, running on a revised version of BMW’s CLAR architecture.
The electric sedan is expected to launch with BMW’s sixth-generation motors and battery tech, including an 800-volt electrical system. Initial variants will likely include the i3 50 xDrive, potentially delivering around 463 hp – putting it in direct competition with the current BMW M3. Additional models, including a rear-wheel drive version and a high-performance iM3 with four motors, are also planned.
