Jaguar is poised to officially unveil the production name for its highly anticipated electric grand tourer, ending months of speculation surrounding the vehicle known internally as the Type 00. According to reports from Autocar India, the British luxury brand will confirm the moniker early next week, marking a pivotal moment in its transition to an all-electric future.
From Concept to Reality
The car, currently referred to by its codename X900 and its concept title Type 00, debuted in December 2024 as a dramatic statement of intent. While the concept showcased Jaguar’s design ambitions, the production model is set to carry a distinct identity. Industry observers are closely watching to see if Jaguar will honor its heritage by reviving a historic nameplate—similar to how the F-Type succeeded the legendary E-Type—or opt for a completely new nomenclature to signal a fresh era.
The finished vehicle is scheduled for a full public reveal in September, with the first customer deliveries expected to hit the road in early next year.
Engineering a New Standard
The Type 00 represents more than just a new model; it is the cornerstone of Jaguar’s “total reset” in both engineering and design philosophy. Built on the Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), the platform is purpose-built for the brand’s upcoming wave of electric vehicles, prioritizing performance, rigidity, and aerodynamics.
Key engineering highlights include:
- Unprecedented Rigidity: With a torsional rigidity of 50,000Nm/deg, the Type 00 is Jaguar’s stiffest car to date. This structural integrity is crucial for delivering precise handling and a refined ride quality.
- Aerodynamic Efficiency: The vehicle boasts a drag coefficient of less than 0.25, making it one of the most aerodynamically efficient production cars in its class. This efficiency directly contributes to its extended range and high-speed stability.
- Tri-Motor Powertrain: The powertrain features a sophisticated layout with one motor on the front axle and two on the rear. This configuration delivers over 1,000 bhp and 959 lb-ft of torque, ensuring supercar-level acceleration.
Range and Refinement
Despite its immense power, the Type 00 is designed for long-distance luxury touring. It is equipped with a battery pack of approximately 120kWh, which supports a driving range of more than 400 miles. This addresses one of the primary concerns for grand tourer buyers: the ability to cover significant distances without frequent charging stops.
Comfort is equally prioritized through an advanced suspension system. The car utilizes two-chamber air springs and adaptive dampers at each corner, allowing it to balance dynamic performance with ride comfort. As noted in earlier test drives, the vehicle aims to combine the plush ride quality of an XJ with the drift-capable agility of an F-Type.
