Geely Considers Extended-Range PHEV SUV for Australian Market After Record-Breaking Run

Geely is evaluating the introduction of a long-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its Starray EM-i SUV to Australia, following a recent Guinness World Record achievement on local roads. The extended-range model, equipped with a larger 29.8kWh battery, recently set a new record for lowest fuel consumption on the Sydney–Melbourne coastal drive. This move reflects a growing trend among automakers to offer PHEVs with increased electric range, catering to consumer demand for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

Record-Breaking Efficiency

The Starray EM-i, which launched in Australia in September, has already gained traction with nearly 1,000 units registered by the end of November. The current model features an 18.4kWh battery offering 83km of electric range (WLTP). However, the record-breaking variant demonstrated impressive real-world efficiency, consuming just 3.83L/100km over a 1,056km journey using 40L of fuel.

Potential Range and Market Implications

If equipped with the same 51L fuel tank as the Australian-spec model, the extended-range Starray EM-i could achieve a combined range exceeding 1,200km. This would position it competitively against other PHEVs in the market, particularly those prioritizing long-distance driving. Geely Auto Australia confirmed they are “constantly exploring opportunities” to expand their product range to meet local demand.

Global Expansion and Future Models

Geely has sold over 114,000 Starray EM-i units worldwide in its first year of production, identifying Australia as a key international market alongside Italy, Mexico, and Indonesia. The company also plans to introduce the all-electric EX2 hatchback to Australia in late 2026, further diversifying its EV offerings.

The introduction of an extended-range Starray EM-i would strengthen Geely’s presence in the Australian market and demonstrate its commitment to offering efficient, long-range PHEV options. The company’s success hinges on delivering competitive pricing and real-world performance that matches consumer expectations.
