Lancia Gamma Reborn as Premium SUV: First Look at New Model

Lancia is bringing back the iconic Gamma nameplate, but not as a sedan. Instead, the Gamma will be a high-end SUV closely related to the Peugeot 3008 and the upcoming DS No7. Recent spy shots have given us our first glimpse of the vehicle undergoing winter testing.

Design and Styling

The Gamma’s design appears to take cues from the smaller Lancia Ypsilon, featuring a distinctive Y-shaped grille and low-profile headlights. Early observations suggest a sleek, coupe-like SUV silhouette, placing it in competition with models such as the Cupra Tavascan and Ford Capri EVs.

Powertrain Options

Under the hood, the Gamma will leverage Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform, offering a versatile range of powertrain choices: traditional combustion engines, hybrid systems, and fully electric options. The prototype captured by Autocar suggests that an EV version will be among the available configurations.

Brand Strategy and Market Position

Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano describes the Gamma as a critical step in the brand’s revitalization, embodying “innovation, style, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.” This launch is particularly important given Lancia’s recent sales struggles; last year, the company sold just 11,747 cars in Europe, a 64% decline from the previous year.

European Focus, Uncertain UK Future

While Lancia was relaunched in 2022 with the Pu+Ra Zero concept, the brand currently has no confirmed plans for a return to the UK market. Lancia left the UK in 1994, and its limited brand recognition there makes a comeback seem unlikely. The Gamma’s success in Europe will be essential for securing Lancia’s long-term viability.

The revival of the Gamma marks a significant shift for Lancia, betting on the growing SUV market to rebuild its presence. Its performance will be closely watched, as the company attempts to regain traction after years of decline.
