Lotus Eletre X PHEV: 939bhp Hybrid SUV Confirmed for UK Market

Lotus has officially detailed the specifications for the hybrid variant of its Eletre SUV, the Eletre X, set to launch in the UK next year. This move marks a key step in Lotus’s ambitious transition from a niche sports car brand to a high-end luxury automaker.

Powertrain and Performance Details

The Eletre X combines a 70kWh battery pack with two electric motors and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine acting primarily as a range extender. This setup delivers a peak combined power of 939bhp, exceeding the all-electric Eletre 900 by 46bhp. While the hybrid model accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds—slightly slower than the pure electric version—it still offers impressive performance.

Range and Charging Capabilities

Lotus claims an all-electric range of up to 260 miles (CLTC cycle), with a more realistic WLTP range of around 200 miles. Total range, including petrol power, is quoted at 877 miles (CLTC cycle). The Eletre X supports DC fast charging at up to 150kW, achieving a 30-80% charge in approximately eight minutes. The powertrain can also generate up to 25kWh of electricity while cruising at 70mph, effectively topping up the battery on the go.

Chassis and Hardware

The hybrid Eletre retains the standard model’s advanced chassis features, including active anti-roll bars, dual-chamber air suspension, and adaptive dampers. To accommodate the added weight of the internal combustion engine (ICE), Lotus has equipped the vehicle with 412mm front brakes and six-piston calipers as standard.

Exterior Changes

The Eletre X features subtle exterior modifications, including additional cooling for the petrol engine at the front and exhaust pipes under the rear bumper. These changes distinguish the hybrid model from its fully electric counterpart.

Market Strategy and Future Plans

Lotus expects the hybrid Eletre X to boost sales as it appeals to buyers who seek electric driving capability with the reassurance of petrol-powered range extension. The same powertrain technology is also expected to be implemented in the upcoming Emeya saloon.

Lotus’s hybrid strategy signals a pragmatic approach to electrification, acknowledging that some customers may not yet be ready to fully commit to battery-only vehicles. The Eletre X offers a bridge between traditional luxury SUVs and the emerging electric market.
