Nissan Confirms Sub-$40,000 Price Target for Revived Xterra SUV

Nissan is bringing back the Xterra, a rugged SUV discontinued in 2015, with a clear focus on affordability and capability. The company has confirmed a target starting price under $40,000, positioning the new model to compete directly with popular off-road SUVs like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota 4Runner.

Return of a Fan Favorite

The revival of the Xterra is largely driven by strong demand from enthusiasts. Nissan executives have acknowledged the need to deliver a vehicle that aligns with the original Xterra’s spirit: fun, simple, and capable. A key element of this revival is color; Nissan plans to offer the new Xterra in a bright yellow shade, likely inspired by the original model’s iconic hue.

Body-on-Frame Design & Powertrain

The new Xterra will be built on a body-on-frame platform, sharing its underpinnings with the current Nissan Frontier pickup truck. Production will take place at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi factory alongside the Frontier.

The SUV is expected to utilize a version of the Frontier’s 3.8-liter V-6 engine, which currently produces 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. While the V-6 is confirmed, Nissan has not ruled out a hybrid powertrain option. A two-speed transfer case with 4Lo will ensure robust off-road performance.

Timeline and Expectations

Nissan has not yet announced an official release date, but the Xterra is anticipated to debut sometime in 2027 as a 2028 model-year vehicle. This return marks a significant move in a competitive segment, with Nissan betting on delivering a capable, affordable, and nostalgic off-roader.

The Xterra’s revival is a direct response to consumer demand for a rugged, value-driven SUV; Nissan is clearly aiming to capture a slice of the growing off-road market with a vehicle that blends practicality with a touch of nostalgia.
