Nissan Z NISMO to Finally Offer Manual Transmission

Nissan will release a manual transmission version of the high-performance Z NISMO model, ending a long wait for enthusiasts. The updated vehicle, known as the Fairlady Z in Japan, is set to go on sale in Japan next summer, with U.S. sales expected by late 2026.

Gearbox Details and Performance

The Z NISMO MT will feature a six-speed manual gearbox, likely adapted to handle the engine’s increased output of 420 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. The standard Z has offered a manual option since 2023, but the NISMO variant was previously only available with a nine-speed automatic. The interior will remain largely unchanged, retaining the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, limited-slip differential, upgraded suspension, and enhanced brakes.

Upcoming Reveal and Future Plans

Nissan will unveil the Z NISMO MT at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, alongside a new NISMO concept car. The automaker also plans to showcase a ruggedized version of the Rogue (sold as the X-Trail in Japan) modified for off-road performance. The Z refresh is expected to improve aerodynamic efficiency, though visual changes may be subtle on the NISMO trim.

The delay in offering a manual transmission on the NISMO variant was unusual given its availability on the standard Z. The decision likely came down to engineering considerations—ensuring the gearbox could reliably handle the higher power output of the NISMO engine—and market demand. Enthusiasts have long requested this option, making its arrival a significant event in the sports car segment.

Nissan’s move suggests a willingness to cater to purists while continuing to refine its performance vehicles. The Z NISMO MT will be available for the 2027 model year in the U.S., allowing drivers to experience the full potential of the car with a traditional manual setup.
