Porsche Revives Gas Macan Amidst Sales Slowdown

Porsche is preparing to launch a new gasoline-powered Macan, despite the push towards electric vehicles. The decision comes after a global sales slump in 2025, forcing the company to reconsider its aggressive electrification strategy. Testing is already underway using an Audi Q5 as a disguise, hinting at the next combustion-engine Macan arriving around 2028.

The Unexpected Return of ICE

The original gas-powered Macan was discontinued in Europe due to cybersecurity regulations. Porsche initially expected the electric Macan to fill the void globally, but slower EV adoption in key markets led to a 10% drop in overall sales. This downturn prompted Porsche to develop a new ICE Macan for markets where demand for gasoline SUVs remains strong.

Disguised Testing and Platform Sharing

Spy photos reveal a prototype disguised as an Audi Q5, with telltale signs like wider wheel arches and a slightly higher ride height. The next Macan will utilize the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion, the same architecture as the latest Audi Q5. This means familiar engine options like 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V6 turbo engines are likely, alongside plug-in hybrid variants.

A Cost-Cutting AWD System?

Porsche may opt for a front-wheel-drive biased all-wheel-drive system to reduce costs. While this setup favors efficiency by prioritizing the front wheels, it can engage the rear axle when needed. This choice would mark a departure from Porsche’s traditional emphasis on rear-biased handling.

Interior and Name Speculation

The mule currently features the Q5’s interior, but Porsche will eventually integrate its own cabin and electronics, borrowing heavily from the Macan Electric and Cayenne Electric. The SUV’s final name remains uncertain; while “Macan” is the logical choice, rumors suggest alternative names like “Cajun” are being considered.

The electric transition is still happening, just not quite as quickly as originally planned.

The revival of a gasoline Macan demonstrates a pragmatic shift in Porsche’s strategy. The company is adapting to market realities, ensuring continued sales while still investing in its electric future.
