Tesla has begun taking orders for the new Model Y L, a six-seat version of its popular electric SUV, in Australia and New Zealand. This marks the first time the extended-wheelbase variant – previously exclusive to China – will be sold outside of that market.
Key Specifications and Pricing
The Model Y L Premium Long Range AWD starts at $74,900 AUD (or $83,900 NZD), offering a configuration similar to the standard Model Y but with added space and features. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026 (April-June).
The vehicle boasts a unique longer body and increased roof height, designed for comfort, with a 2+2+2 seating layout. Notably, this is the first Tesla model to launch with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, confirmed through testing at CrashLabs in Sydney.
Performance and Range
The Model Y L delivers 378kW of power and 590Nm of torque, achieving a 0-100km/h acceleration in just 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 201km/h. The WLTP-rated range is 681km, suggesting a larger battery compared to the standard Model Y, though Tesla has not yet revealed specific battery details. Charging times remain consistent with other Tesla models, taking around 25-30 minutes for an 80% recharge using a 250kW DC charger.
Design and Dimensions
The Model Y L is 177mm longer overall than the standard Model Y, with 150mm added to the wheelbase, maximizing passenger space in the second and third rows. It’s also 44mm taller, with a drag coefficient of 0.216Cd.
Other design updates include new 19-inch ‘Machina 2.0’ wheels, a redesigned C-pillar, a rear spoiler inspired by the Model Y Performance, and an exclusive Cosmic Silver exterior paint option. Inside, the seats have been redesigned with heated and ventilated front and second-row chairs, as well as a heated third row.
Functionality and Storage
The Model Y L introduces Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality to the Australian and New Zealand markets, allowing for 3.3kW of power output to external devices.
Storage capacity is substantial, with up to 2539L available when the rear seats are folded, 420L behind the third row, and 1076L with the rearmost bench folded. The front trunk (Frunk) offers an additional 116L of space.
Warranty and Availability
Tesla provides a five-year, unlimited-kilometer vehicle warranty with five years of roadside assistance. The battery and driver unit are covered for eight years or 192,000km, with a minimum 70% capacity retention guaranteed. Test drive vehicles are available in showrooms now.
The Model Y L’s arrival represents Tesla’s push to expand its product line and cater to markets that require larger, family-oriented electric vehicles. The extended range and seating configuration make it a compelling option for buyers seeking a practical and efficient all-electric SUV.
