Toyota Addresses Parking Camera Glitch in Over 100,000 Vehicles

Toyota is addressing a software fault impacting the parking cameras in over 100,000 vehicles across several popular models. Instead of issuing a traditional recall, the company is calling this a “Customer Service Exercise,” offering free reprogramming of affected vehicle’s software to owners.

The issue stems from the Parking Assist ECU, which plays a crucial role in the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system that displays the rearview image when reversing. According to Toyota Australia’s notice on its website, this software glitch can manifest in two ways:

  • Temporary freezing: The rearview image may briefly freeze while backing up if reverse gear is engaged within a specific time frame after starting the engine.
  • Image failure: In some cases, the rearview image might completely fail to display upon restarting the vehicle if the ignition is turned on and off rapidly within a designated timeframe.

This software flaw affects various Toyota models manufactured between 2022 and 2025, including popular options like the bZ4X, C-HR, Camry, Corolla Cross, Kluger, LandCruiser 300 Series, Mirai, Prado, and RAV4. A total of 108,862 vehicles are included in this service campaign.

Toyota Australia is proactively reaching out to all owners of affected vehicles directly. The fix involves an inspection and reprogramming procedure performed at a Toyota dealership, which typically takes about one hour. However, depending on the dealer’s workload, vehicle owners might need to allow for a slightly longer timeframe.

What This Means For Owners

If you own any of the listed models manufactured within the specified years, be on the lookout for contact from Toyota Australia regarding this service campaign. While inconvenient, this proactive approach by Toyota demonstrates their commitment to addressing potential safety and functionality concerns promptly. The free reprogramming service aims to ensure your parking camera operates reliably, enhancing both safety and convenience when maneuvering your vehicle.
