Vauxhall is bringing back a performance-focused Corsa later this year, marking its first serious hot hatch since the Corsa VXR was discontinued in 2016. The new model, dubbed the Corsa GSE, will be the second vehicle under the relaunched GSE sub-brand — previously used for high-performance cars, but now focused on electric vehicles.
GSE: From Trim Level to Performance Badge
The GSE designation isn’t just a cosmetic upgrade anymore. Last July, Vauxhall redefined it as a badge for more aggressively tuned EVs, rather than a simple trim package. The Corsa GSE will follow the lead of the Mokka GSE, which received a substantial power increase (276bhp) and chassis enhancements.
What to Expect: Power and Handling
While official details are still scarce, expect significant upgrades beyond visual tweaks. The Mokka GSE received almost double the standard model’s power, paired with chassis modifications designed to handle the added grunt. Key components included:
- A 276bhp electric motor, comparable to the Abarth 600e.
- A limited-slip differential for improved front-end grip.
- Upgraded anti-roll bars and stiffer bushings for better handling.
- High-performance Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires.
- Improved braking systems to manage the increased speed.
Given these upgrades, the Corsa GSE is likely to accelerate faster than the Mokka GSE’s 5.9-second 0-62mph time.
Design Hints from the Vision Gran Turismo Concept
Vauxhall unveiled a Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo concept last August, hinting at future design elements. While extreme features like a moveable rear wing won’t make it to production, the concept’s aggressive Vizor fascia — Vauxhall’s signature front-end design element — could be adapted for the road-going version. Design boss Mark Adams has confirmed that the brand is actively exploring this direction.
A Return to Vauxhall’s Hot Hatch Roots
The Corsa GSE continues a tradition of sporty Vauxhall models, including the Nova GSi and the popular Corsa VXR. According to Vauxhall boss Eurig Druce, the Corsa GSE will deliver “thrilling, pure electric, motorsport-inspired power and dynamics” in a practical small car package.
Pricing and Availability
The Corsa GSE is expected to cost around £35,000, slightly above the current range-topping Electric 156PS Ultimate (£33,720). Further details will be revealed later this year.
The Corsa GSE represents a strategic move for Vauxhall, reinforcing its commitment to performance EVs and reviving a beloved segment in its history.
