Xpeng, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, is poised to unveil a new model within its popular G6 SUV lineup: the G6 EREV. This extended-range electric version, recently detailed in a filing by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), aims to bridge the gap between pure EVs and traditional gasoline vehicles for consumers seeking greater range confidence.
The key specifications reveal a 55.8 kWh battery pack powering the rear wheels through a powerful 218 kW electric motor, enabling an estimated 325 km of purely electric driving. This distance represents a significant portion of typical daily commutes, aiming to reduce dependence on the accompanying range-extender system.
Complementing the EV drive is a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, generating 110 kW and produced by Dong’an Powertrain. While operating solely as a generator, this range extender boosts total driving distance significantly. Although MIIT data doesn’t specify the combined range, earlier reports suggest potential figures exceeding 1,400 km. This hybrid setup could offer long-distance comfort without sacrificing everyday EV usability.
The G6 EREV mirrors its purely electric sibling in dimensions, spanning 4,771 mm in length, with a width of 1,920 mm and a height of 1,650 mm. The wheelbase measures 2,890 mm. Notably, the vehicle maintains the sleek styling cues of the standard G6 fastback SUV: a sloping front end, integrated headlights, a continuous LED daytime running light bar, retractable door handles, and a sporty roofline. The model offers both R18 and R20 wheel size options.
This expansion into extended-range EVs falls under Xpeng’s broader “Kunpeng Super Electric System” initiative, demonstrating a strategic approach to diverse consumer needs. By incorporating a smaller battery compared to the standard G6 BEV variant, Xpeng potentially aims to reduce costs, minimize weight, and optimize packaging to accommodate the range-extender system.
The MIIT filing confirms that the G6 EREV is navigating regulatory approvals but an official launch date remains under wraps. Market speculation points toward a launch before the year’s end. Pricing details are still unclear, though the standard BEV G6 starts at 176,800 yuan (approximately $24,830 USD). Practical performance metrics like charging times, real-world range under varied conditions, and the efficiency of the gasoline generator remain to be comprehensively tested and revealed.
