Vehicle Theft Ring Exploits Dealerships for $2.4 Million in Stolen Trucks

A sophisticated vehicle theft ring operating across multiple states has been dismantled following a year-long investigation led by the Old Saybrook Police Department. The scheme, which targeted high-end trucks at dealerships in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, resulted in over $2.4 million in stolen vehicles.

The Playbook: Distraction and Key Cloning

The operation relied on a simple yet effective tactic: suspects posing as legitimate buyers requesting test drives. Once behind the wheel, the duo employed a two-pronged approach to steal the vehicles.

In some cases, the female suspect intentionally distracted dealership staff – reportedly with “playful” behavior – while her partner swapped the real key fob for a counterfeit. In others, the pair used an OBDII port to clone the key within minutes, allowing them to return later and drive the truck off the lot undetected.

Notable Incidents

The thefts date back to March 2024, with several high-profile incidents:

  • Monaco Ford, Glastonbury (March 2024): A 2024 F-450 pickup, valued at $86,515, vanished after a test drive where the key fob was allegedly swapped.
  • New Jersey (approx. 2025): Similar tactics were used to steal a $115,000 Ford pickup.
  • Vachon Buick GMC, Old Saybrook (February 2025): Two GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali Ultimate pickups disappeared without any key fobs reported missing, indicating cloning was used.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Tiffine Kyte, 37, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was arrested in New Jersey in January 2026 and extradited to Connecticut. She faces multiple charges of first-degree motor vehicle larceny and conspiracy, held on a $275,000 bond.

Authorities have not yet apprehended her suspected accomplice, and the investigation remains active.

Law Enforcement Response

Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael Onofrio emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation and public vigilance in disrupting organized theft rings. He stated that such operations thrive on opportunity and anonymity, making information sharing crucial to prevention.

“This case highlights the value of strong partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the private sector… When businesses, residents, and police share information and remain vigilant, we significantly reduce those opportunities and protect our communities.”

The success of the investigation underscores the need for heightened security measures at dealerships and increased awareness among staff. The ring’s efficiency demonstrates how easily modern vehicles can be stolen with minimal technical skill, emphasizing the growing sophistication of automotive theft.
