MG Motor Australia is offering discounted prices on its MG 4 electric hatchback as it prepares to streamline the model range and introduce a new, lower-cost MG 4 Urban variant. The current base model, the MG 4 Excite 51, is now available for $37,990 drive-away nationwide, a reduction of $365 to $2,526, before it is discontinued.
Price Fluctuations and Sales Trends
The MG 4 launched in Australia in 2023 with a starting price of $38,990. Aggressive promotions in September and October 2024 briefly lowered the Excite 51 to $30,990 drive-away, backed by factory bonuses of $5,000 to $8,000. These deals fueled a 97.9% surge in sales compared to the previous year. However, prices were later increased to $32,990, and sales have since declined by 47.6% to 2,756 units through October 2024.
Upcoming Lineup Changes
MG will restructure its electric small car strategy next year with two distinct offerings. The rear-wheel-drive MG 4 will remain, but only with the mid-range 64kWh battery and unspecified “updated features.” Below it will be the new front-wheel-drive MG 4 Urban, available with either 43kWh or 54kWh batteries and a 120kW/250Nm electric motor.
Design and Engineering Tradeoffs
The MG 4 Urban features softer styling and is slightly larger overall. However, it rides on a different platform with a less sophisticated torsion-beam rear suspension. The current MG 4’s more advanced suspension setup will be reserved for the higher-spec models.
Charging Incentives
All MG 4s sold before December 31, 2025, will include a 12-month/1,000kWh voucher for the Evie charging network. Premium paint remains a $700 option.
The price cuts and lineup changes signal MG’s strategy to maintain competitiveness in the electric vehicle market while streamlining its product portfolio. The shift to a dual-model approach with the MG 4 and MG 4 Urban reflects a broader trend of automakers tailoring their offerings to different price segments
