Chinese electric car manufacturers are currently making big profits in Europe. Aggressive pricing based on strong technical specifications wins the hearts of buyers. BYD has emerged as a dominant force in this change. Just as it launched Seal U, the brand is also launching a new compact offering, Yuan Up. This small electric SUV is 4.31 meters long, 1.83 meters wide and 1.68 meters high. It is already on sale in China and will soon be available in Europe as well.
The biggest selling point of this car is its price. Even if there are no green benefits, the cost of entry is very low. Converted to euros, the basic model starts at around 12,600 euros. This gives an output of 70 kW (86 hp). If you need more power, the top version costs 15,500 euros. This upgrade gives you 130 kW (176 hp).
Can Yuan Up compete with Tesla’s cheapest alternative?
Prices in Europe can be even higher when local taxes and logistics are taken into account. However, the final numbers should be aggressive enough to challenge the upcoming Tesla Model 2. The Range is where compromises arise. The range of the basic model is about 300 kilometers. More efficient versions have a range of up to 400 kilometers. Charging from 30% to 80% takes about 30 minutes.
The BYD Yuan Up offers an attractive entry into the electric vehicle segment, but its 300-400 km range may put it up against established rivals in cold regions.
The cabin comfortably accommodates 5 adults. The dashboard has a 12.8-inch touchscreen. Unlike Tesla’s minimalist style, BYD uses physical buttons. They are located around the steering wheel and center display. The driver’s dashboard has an 8.8-inch screen. It is unclear if “Yuan Up” will be officially sold in France.
It is not just a question of whether Chinese brands can enter the market. The question is whether this pricing can be maintained while maintaining profit margins. Regulations and tariffs are getting tighter in Europe. But the Yuan Up proves that compact electric SUVs are no longer a luxury segment. They are coming within reach. It remains to be seen whether BYD can navigate the complex European distribution network alone. The barriers to entry are significantly lower.
