Wuling’s Mobile Battery Stations Are Here to Fix EV Charging Chaos

Smartphone battery anxiety is a universal experience. We carry power banks. We hunt for outlets. The logic is simple: store energy, move it, dump it in when you need it. Chinese automaker Wuling took that exact consumer logic and scaled it up to a ridiculous, industrial level.

At the Guangzhou Auto Show, they unveiled two mobile charging stations for electric vehicles. One is a wheeled cart. The other is a fully autonomous, AI-driven vehicle with a massive battery. The goal? To solve the gridlock at charging stations during holidays.

Solving Peak Load with Rolling Batteries

China is miles ahead in EV infrastructure, but that also means they are miles ahead in infrastructure problems. During long weekends or holiday travel rushes, charging stations become parking lots. Cars wait. Drivers get frustrated. The grid strains under the localized demand spike.

Wuling’s solution isn’t to build more stationary chargers. It’s to bring the energy to where the bottleneck is. They call it a Mobile Energy Storage and Charging Vehicle (MESCV). It’s basically a giant external battery that can drive itself.

The larger unit is a beast. It weighs enough to look like a small trailer and holds 141 kilowatt-hours of storage. It moves at walking speed—5 km/h. It’s not for homeowners with a driveway. It’s for charging station operators. When a station is swamped, this unit rolls in, plugs in, and dumps its stored energy into the local network or directly into cars. It creates flexibility. It acts as a buffer against the rush.

The Two Tiers of Mobile Power

Wuling didn’t just build one solution. They built two, targeting different needs and budgets.

The smaller unit is the VA100T. It looks like a heavy-duty industrial cart. You can push it manually. It delivers 30 kWh of charge. The price tag sits around €10,000. It’s a stopgap. A manual extension cord with a battery in the middle.

The larger unit is the autonomous powerhouse. Dimensions: 2,280 x 940 x 1,969 mm. It’s roughly the size of a large golf cart but much taller. It holds 140 kWh. It costs about €40,000. It uses AI to navigate and position itself at charging spots. It doesn’t need a human to push it into place.

This isn’t about replacing home charging. It’s about saving commercial charging hubs from collapsing under peak demand.

Will We See This in Europe?

Maybe not soon.

The specific problem Wuling is solving—extreme, predictable spikes in charging station usage—is uniquely Chinese right now. The sheer volume of EV adoption there has created bottlenecks that infrastructure can’t keep up with. Europe is adopting EVs faster, but the patterns of usage are different. We don’t have the same scale of holiday travel congestion in the same way.

Plus, the regulatory environment for autonomous, low-speed vehicles in public spaces is a nightmare here. Getting that AI-driven cart to legally navigate a crowded rest stop requires paperwork that would make your head spin.

The VA100T is cheap enough that you might see it in logistics parks. The 140 kWh autonomous rig? That’s
