Decoding Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) to Prevent Suspension Failure

You pick up a key. You think about MPG. You check 0-60 times. You calculate trunk volume and engine torque. Maybe you look at the sticker price. These are the metrics that drive consumer decisions. But they ignore a hard limit. One that defines safety.

It’s called the gross axle weight rating, or GAWR.

Ignore it, and you risk losing control. Not later. Now.

What is GAWR?

GAWR is not a suggestion. It is a manufacturer-defined maximum. It represents the specific weight capacity for a single axle. Front axles have a rating. Rear axles have their own. Think of it as a hard ceiling. You never load beyond it.

The definition seems simple. But the weight calculation is complex. It includes the vehicle’s own weight. Passengers. Cargo. Even tongue weight if you are towing. This mass splits between the two axles. But the limit applies to each side independently.

GAW vs. GAWR: The Critical Distinction

Confusion here kills. Or at least, it breaks axles.

GAWR is static. It is stamped by the factory. It does not change.

GAW (Gross Axle Weight) is dynamic. It is the actual load on the axle at any given second.

The GAW changes constantly. The GAWR never moves.

Picture a pickup truck. It holds four 100-pound boulders. Total load: 400 pounds. The GAW increases by that 400 pounds. If you unload the rocks, the GAW drops by 400 pounds. The GAWR? It sits there. Unmoved. Indifferent to your cargo.

Mix these up, and you get dangerous assumptions. You might think you are safe because the truck isn’t overloaded overall. But one axle could be exceeding its specific GAWR. Even if the other axle is light.

Why Overloading an Axle Fails

Safety isn’t about legal liability. It’s about physics.

Overloading any vehicle is bad. Doing it to a single axle is worse. Uneven distribution magnifies the risk. Put too much weight on the rear axle? Watch what happens.

  1. Steering dies. The front wheels lose grip. Responsiveness vanishes. You turn the wheel; the truck goes straight.
  2. Brakes fail. Front brakes handle most stopping power. A rear-heavy load shifts the center of gravity back. The front brakes get overwhelmed. Stopping distances lengthen.
  3. Tires blow. Rear tires aren’t rated for the sudden mass increase. They heat up. They fail.
  4. Suspension snaps. Springs and shocks bend. Or break. If the rear suspension collapses, control is gone.

Trailers are just as vulnerable. They have their own GAWRs. Set by the trailer maker. Improper loading creates sway. Sway kills. Balanced loading is non-negotiable.

Where to Find Your GAWR

You don’t need a degree in engineering to find this number. Look at the driver’s door jamb. There is a label. It lists the GAWR for front and rear axles.

If the label is gone, check the manufacturer’s website. Most automakers publish these specs online. You can also check the charts below.

Let’s look at the heavy hitters first. The European imports are often lighter on paper but pack serious torque. Knowing where the axle limits actually sit matters more than just knowing your total curb weight. You can’t cheat physics just because you have an M-sport package.

BMW GAWR

BMW didn’t always publish front/rear splits for every single trim. The 2006-2009 range is a mix of E60/61 5-series, E9x M3/M5, and the E53 X5. If you’re towing or carrying heavy cargo in the trunk, check the rear rating carefully.

2006 BMW Models

Most sedans like the 325, 330, 525, 530, 550, 650, 750, and 760 lack published GAWR data in standard catalogs. The M variants (M3, M5, M6 ) and SUVs (X3, X5, Z4, Z4M ) also show blanks in this dataset.

2007 BMW Models

The Z4 finally has a clear rating: 2767 lbs front / 3770 lbs rear. Everything else—the 328, 335, 525, 530, 550, 650, 750, 760, Alpina B7, M5, M6, X3, and X5 —remains unspecified in this specific data set.

2008-2009 BMW Models

The 128, 135, 328, 335, 528, 535, 550, 650, 750, 760, Alpina B7, M3, M5, X3, X5, X6, Z4, and Z4M have no listed GAWR figures here.

Buick GAWR

Buick’s luxury push in the late 2000s brought us the LaCrosse and Lucerne, but the SUVs and minivans held the real weight limits. The Terraza is surprisingly light on the front axle.

Ford Load Limits by Year and Model

It’s likely these models don’t require separate GAWR listings for standard consumer sale, or the data source omitted them.

Exceptions exist. The 2006 Odyssey had 3197 lbs rear. The Ridgeline started weak at 2533 lbs rear in 2006. Wait, the table says 309/3252 for Ridgeline 2006? That looks like a typo in the source data for the front axle. 309 lbs is absurd. Let’s look at 2007.

2007 Ridgeline jumps to 3105 front, 3252 rear. That makes sense. The 2007 Civic gains data: 2310 front, 2290 rear. The Element gets 2205 rear. The Pilot hits 3155 rear.

2008 mirrors 2007. Civic, Element, Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Pilot all keep the same ratings.

2009 drops Civic data entirely. The Pilot gets a slight boost to 3196 lbs rear. The Ridgeline is absent from the 2009 list. The Odyssey stays at 3197 rear.

Hummer Load Capacities

Hummer didn’t vary much. The H2 was constant from 2006 to 2009. 4000 lbs front. 5000 lbs rear. It’s a heavy vehicle. The H2 curb weight is close to its payload limits.

The H1 Alpha in 2006 was heavier. 6800 lbs rear GAWR. 4100 lbs front.

The H3 and H3T had no GAWR data listed for any year from 2006 to 2009. This is odd. They are smaller than the H2. It’s possible the source only tracked commercial or heavy-duty variant limits, or the data is simply missing for the consumer H3 models.

Hyundai GAWR Data

2007 changes things. The Entourage appears with 3064 lbs rear GAWR. The Santa Fe gets 3197 lbs rear. Front is 2976 lbs. The Veracruz and others remain blank.

2008 keeps the same numbers. Entourage and Santa Fe unchanged.

2009 drops the Entourage and Santa Fe from the list entirely. The Genesis and Sonata are also blank. Hyundai’s compact SUVs and vans seem to be the only ones with tracked GAWR in this specific timeframe.

Infiniti GAWR Listings

Infiniti is largely empty here. From 2006 to 2009, models like the FX35, FX45, G35, M35, M45, Q45, QX56, EX35, G37, and FX50 all have no GAWR data. This luxury brand’s load limits are not included in this specific dataset. You’ll need to consult the owner’s manual or door jamb stickers for these vehicles.

Isuzu GAWR Ratings

Isuzu had a few models tracked. The Ascender consistently held 3200 lbs rear GAWR from 2006 to 2008. Front was 2950 lbs.

The i-series trucks changed names. The i-280 (2006) became the i-290 (2007-2008). The i-350 (2006) became the i-370 (2007-2008). Both variants held 2896 lbs rear GAWR. Front ratings were 2533 lbs for the i-280/i-290 and 2753 lbs for the i-350, dropping to 2533 lbs for the i-370. The i-370 lost some front axle capacity compared to its predecessor despite the model number increase.

Jaguar GAWR Data

Jaguar’s data is completely blank. From 2006 to

Jeep GAWR

Jeep’s approach to axle ratings shifted noticeably in the late 2000s. The Wrangler and Liberty were the only models where you could actually find GAWR (front/rear) data, and even then, it wasn’t consistent year-over-year.

Kia GAWR

Kia had a different problem. They provided data for specific models, but gaps appeared as the lineup evolved. The Sedona and Sorento held steady at 2998/3064 lbs and 3307/3307 lbs respectively in 2006 and 2007.

The Rio and Rio 5 held firm at 1918/1874 lbs from 2007 to 2008. Sportage ratings stayed consistent at 2579/2425 lbs across 2006, 2007, and 2008.

By 2009, the Borrego and Spectra models entered the chart without GAWR figures.

Land Rover GAWR

Land Rover’s luxury SUVs mostly left the GAWR field blank during this period. The LR3, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport showed no data from 2006 through 2008.

In 2009, the LR2 finally showed up with a front/rear split of 2885/2995 lbs. The rest of the fleet remained unlisted.

Lexus GAWR

Lexus didn’t publish GAWR specs for any of these models. From the ES 330/350 to the LS 430/460, and including hybrids like the RX 400h and GS 450h, every entry from 2006 to 2009 is a dash. Even the performance-focused IS-F and the heavy LX 570 lack this specific rating in these records.

Lincoln GAWR

Lincoln stuck to a few key models for axle data. The Mark LT held a steady 3450 front / 3850 rear rating from 2006 through 2008. In 2009, the Navigator updated to 3450/3850 lbs, matching the Mark LT’s rear capacity.

The Navigator started higher in 2007 and 2008 at 3350/4300 lbs, but dropped in 2009. The MKX, MKZ, MKS, and Town Car showed no data.

Mazda GAWR

Mazda’s truck-based models carried significant loads. The B-Series trucks varied by engine size. The B2300 sat at 2400/2750 lbs. The B3000 moved to 2625/2750 lbs. The beefier B4000 pushed 2850 front / 2750 rear.

Passenger cars were lighter. The Mazda5 held 2218/2355 lbs in 2006 and 2007. The Mazda6 started strong in 2006 at 2372/2119 lbs, dropped slightly in 2008 to 2216/2064 lbs, and settled at 2286/2062 lbs in 2009. The MX-5 showed 2449/2103 lbs in 2007. The MazdaSpeed3 posted 2216/2064 lbs in 2007.

Mercedes-Benz GAWR

Mercedes-Benz models from 2006 to 2009 showed no GAWR data. This covers the full range from the C-Class to the S-Class, the G500/G55/GL series, the SLK, SL, CLS, and even the SLR McLaren.

Mercury GAWR

Mercury’s data is sparse and dated. The Mountaineer is the only model with a rating, listed at 2860/3340 lbs for 2006. All other models—Grand Marquis, Mariner, Milan, Montego, Monterey, Sable, and the hybrid variants—showed no data for any year from 2006 to 2009.

MINI GAWR

MINI started reporting in 2007. The Cooper Hardtop held 1929/1653 lbs. The Cooper Convertible sat at 1918/1697 lbs.

In 2008, the Cooper Clubman joined the list at 1830/1830 lbs. The Hardtop and Convertible maintained their 2007 figures.

By 2009, the John Cooper Works Hardtop matched the standard Hardtop at 1918/1676 lbs. The John Cooper Works Clubman bumped the rear to 1863 lbs, sitting at 1929 front / 1863 rear.

Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Pontiac Weight Limits

Mitsubishi didn’t bother listing individual axle weights for most of its lineup. The data is sparse. You get zeros or blanks for the Eclipse, Endeavor, Galant, Lancer, Montero, and Outlander across 2006 to 2009. The only exception is the Raider. It holds steady at 3100/3600 lbs front and rear for those three years. If you’re towing with an Eclipse, you’re guessing.

Nissan was slightly more transparent. The Altima carries 2399/1991 lbs in 2006. Front axle takes the bulk of the load. Rear axle trails behind. The Frontier picks up in 2007. It lists 3296/3197 lbs. It’s likely a percentage split or a data error. Ignore it. The G5, G6, G8, Solstice, and Vibe have no data. Just blanks. The Torrent reappears in 2009 with 2535/2535 lbs. Nothing changed. Porsche, Saab, and Saturn Specs

Porsche lists models but no numbers. The 2006 Cayenne has nothing. The 2008 911, Boxter, Cayenne, and Cayman have nothing. 2009 adds the 911 Carrera. Still no numbers. Porsche doesn’t want you knowing how much you can put on the axles. Or the database is just empty. There’s a difference.

Scion, Smart, and Subaru Axle Loads

Scion lists models but never the weights. The tC, xA, and xB in 2006. The tC in 2007. The tC, xB, and xD in 2008. The tC, xB, and xD in 2009. Zero numbers. Scion didn’t think their buyers needed to know. Or the data was never collected. You can’t tow a Scion seriously anyway. It’s a subcompact platform.

Smart only enters in 2008. The fortwo. No GAWR. The car weighs less than many SUVs. Axle limits don’t matter when the curb weight is 2,000 lbs. There’s nothing to overload.

Subaru is thorough. 2006 lists every model. B9 Tribeca, Baja, Forester, Impreza Sedan, Impreza Wagon, Impreza Outback Sport, Impreza WRX Sti, Legacy Sedan, Legacy Wagon, and Outback. All blank. 2007 removes Baja and Impreza WRX Sti. Still blank. 2008 adds Impreza WRX Sti and Tribeca (spelled without the 9). Still blank. 2009 keeps Forester, Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca. All blank. Subaru gives you model names. It refuses to give you axle limits.

Suzuki and Toyota Payload Data

Suzuki actually lists numbers. The 2006 Aerio has 1918/1940 lbs. Front is lighter. Rear is heavier. The Forenza has 1918/1764 lbs. Front carries more. The XL7 has 2205/2866 lbs. Heavy rear bias. 2007 adds the SX4. It lists 2050/1786 lbs. Front is heavier. The XL7 jumps to 2590/2921 lbs. 2008 keeps the SX4 blank. The XL7 holds 2590/2921 lbs. 2009 removes the Aerio, Forenza, SX4, and XL7 from the list. The Equator appears. It’s blank. Suzuki’s data is scattered.

Why GAWR Matters for Your Build

You might think Gross Axle Weight Rating is just paperwork. It isn’t. It’s physics. If you put 3,000 lbs on a front axle rated for 2,500 lbs, the suspension collapses. The steering goes numb. You lose control. The frame might bend. The brakes can’t handle the imbalance.
