You might think that any motor oil with the right API certification will do the trick. That assumption is dangerous. Modern engines have tight clearances between moving parts. The oil film needs to be exactly a certain thickness. Too thin? Metal touches metal. Too thick? The pump can’t push it fast enough at startup.
Take a high-performance sports car versus a heavy-duty pickup. They sit on opposite ends of the driving spectrum. One needs oil that flows instantly in cold weather to protect a turbocharged engine. The other needs oil that stays thick under heavy loads and high heat. Using the wrong spec breaks that balance.
