How the Parking Brake Actually Works on Drum Brake Systems

The parking brake has a simple job. It must operate independently from your main hydraulic system. If the brakes fail on the highway, this mechanical backup is your only hope.

Most older cars and some modern trucks use drum brakes for the rear wheels. These systems rely on a simple cable. You pull the lever. The cable tightens. A mechanical force takes over where fluid pressure used to be.

Here is what happens inside the drum.

When you engage the emergency brake, a steel cable pulls on a lever. This lever pushes against the brake shoes. The shoes are forced apart. They press against the rotating drum. Friction stops the wheel. It is direct. It is mechanical. There is no fluid involved.

The emergency brake must actuate using a power source distinct from the primary braking system.

This design is rugged. Cables can stretch. Levers can get stiff. But they work when hydraulics leak out. It is not sophisticated. It is reliable.

Check your cables regularly. A loose cable means the car won’t stay put on a hill. A stuck lever means you are driving with the brake on. Both are bad news. But the basic principle remains the same. Pull the lever. Spread the shoes. Stop the car.
