In 1997, Shenk wrote a booklet about the era. The stacked theme didn’t start in 1965. It started in 1962-1963 in the Mercury studio.

They walked into the studio. They saw the stacked look. They loved it.

They told Gene Bordinat, design vice president, to put them on the 1965 Ford.

Before that request, Ford was trying to adapt European-style rectangular headlamps to the 1965 Ford model.

They were having trouble getting them legalized.

Regulations are a pain.

Iacocca and Petersen wanted a solution. The stacked heads were the answer.

So the Comet got them. The big Fords didn’t.

Why the Mercury Comet Stacked Its Headlights

The story of the 1965 Mercury Comet stacked headlights is a tangled mess of corporate mandates, cost-cutting, and accidental industry trends. There are three competing accounts for how the vertical lamps ended up on the car, and none of them tell a simple story.

Leo Shenk claims Lee Iacocca forced the Ford division to switch to vertical lights. The real problem was differentiation. Leo Bordinat, the styling director, insisted Mercury use side-by-side quads with a conventional grille to stay distinct from Ford. But the Comet’s front fenders were already tooled for stacked lights. So they went with it.

A.B. (Buzz) Grisinger, Lincoln-Mercury’s design director at the time, backs up the existence of the conflict. He remembers Bordinat coming over and demanding an alternate theme so the 1965 Mercury wouldn’t look like the 1965 Ford. Grisinger notes that everyone in the industry was experimenting with vertical headlights then. It wasn’t unique to Dearborn.

The Ford Side of the Coin

Joe Oros, Ford’s styling director, tells a different story. He says the stacked headlights originated in a Ford studio, not Mercury. Saved notes show work began in January 1962. This timeline debunks the theory that Ford stole the idea from the 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix. Unless Ford designers had a sneak peek at a preproduction Pontiac, the vertical lamps were a Ford invention.

Gale Halderman, former Ford design manager, agrees. He recalls the 1965 program was chaotic. The Mustang and Galaxie were happening simultaneously. Tooling costs were critical.

Bordinat was a genius at saving money. The creased, squarish 1965 Ford front fender used a shallow stamping die bent along a horizontal crease. There was an economic reason for the stacked lights. They followed the volume line of that cheap stamping process.

Halderman has no memory of Iacocca or Petersen forcing a Mercury theme onto Ford. It’s more likely both divisions pursued the same theme. Bordinat discouraged the Mercury version to keep the brands visually distinct.

A Temporary Fad

Vertical headlights became a Sixties fad. Once established on the 1965 Comet, they stayed for two more years. The related Fairlane adopted them in 1966 and 1967. Cadillacs, Buicks, Plymouths, and AMCs also used stacked lights before 1969. It was a trend, not a revolution.

The numbers on paper looked decent. The 390 cubic-inch V-8 in the Cyclone GT produced 335 horsepower. Real-world testing told a different story. Car Life magazine had little patience for the engine’s limitations. They didn’t mince words. The problem lay in the cylinder heads. Restrictive valve passages choked the engine’s ability to breathe. It couldn’t exhale efficiently.

Hydraulic lifters added another layer of frustration. They capped the revs. You simply couldn’t push past 5,000 rpm. Even with an open exhaust system, the lifters pumped up and stalled performance. The engine felt dead at the top end.

Performance figures reflected this bottleneck. An automatic transmission and 3.25:1 rear axle ratio yielded a top speed of 120 mph. The quarter-mile time was a sluggish 15.2 seconds at 90 mph. Zero to 60 mph was quicker. It took 6.6 seconds. That gap between quick acceleration and weak top-end power proved one thing. The 390 made its torque low in the rev range. It was a low-rev torque monster, not a high-revving performer.

Management shuffles hurt Mercury’s focus

The Comet itself didn’t change much for 1967. What changed were the people in charge at Lincoln-Mercury. In 1964, Ben D. Mills moved up to corporate vice president of purchasing. His assistant, Paul F. Lorenz, took over as general manager. Then came 1966. Gar Laux arrived from the Ford Division. He had been general sales manager under Lee Iacocca.

Laux replaced Lorenz. This meant Lorenz only oversaw the 1966 selling season. Laux took the helm for 1967. Strategy shifted under new leadership. Marketing themes evolved.

The Cougar effect on Comet sales

Mercury was sliding in the mid-Sixties. Big Mercury sales dropped hard. 1967 sales hit just under 123,000 units. That was a 29% drop from 1966’s 173,000. It was also 32.5% below the 1965 peak of 182,000. Full-sized cars had reclaimed their title as the best-selling line since 1965. Comets lagged behind.

Demand for Comets cratered. 1966 saw a healthy 170,000 sales. 1967 plunged to 81,000. Labor problems hit all automakers that year. But Mercury’s own product cannibalism played a bigger role. The Cougar arrived in 1967. It stole sales from the Comet.

Mercury built almost 151,000 Cougars. The new sports coupe drove the company to a record sales year. Customers lured by the Cougar’s style likely abandoned upmarket Comets. The Comet lost its allure.

Management decided to drop the “durability” angle. They pivoted to personality. The 1967 Comet was now “The Man’s Car.” Dealer brochaces screamed about excitement. The Cyclone two-door hardtop or convertible got the spotlight.

“The man who loves the excitement of high performance will just naturally take to the Cyclone,” the copy read. It emphasized the Cyclone 289 V-8. “Man-powered with the Cyclone 289 V-8… this is the Man’s Car with a heritage of performance.”

Mercury Cyclone was for men who liked big action. The messaging was aggressive. It targeted ego. It ignored engineering constraints. It sold an image that the 390 engine couldn’t quite deliver at high speeds. The Comet survived, but the era of pure durability was over. Performance branding took over.

The Man’s Car and the Comet’s Identity Crisis

The 1967 Cyclone GT hardtop started at $3,034. That’s $143 more than the previous year.

Madison Avenue pushed the “Man’s Car” campaign hard. It was a deliberate jab at the women’s movement. Women’s lib was seen as fringe. The Vietnam protests were heating up. The 427 V-8 Finally Comes Out of Hiding

Built for Drag Racing

The 427 V-8 came from the same 352-cubic-inch Y-block ancestor as the 390. But that’s where the similarity ended. The 390 was for street use. The 427 was engineered for all-out drag racing.

Castings were heavier duty. Internal parts were beefed up. Pistons. Rods. Forged-steel crankshaft. Cross-bolted main-bearing caps. The profile was slightly higher.

Despite the power, a relative handful of 427s were ordered in 1967 Comets.
